townhouse

Enjoying the sunset from the terraces of Casapueblo is, without a doubt, a mandatory experience if you are in Punta Del Este. This habitable work by Carlos Páez Vilaró is located 13 km from Punta del Este, in Punta Ballena.
It was while searching for a place for his new workshop that the artist found the area that immediately won him over. The spontaneity of his construction was present throughout the process, even at the time of purchase. The land was not sold in small lots, so he had to buy a large area; that inhospitable place later acquired popularity and exclusivity. Construction began in 1960 and comprised only a tin rancho that was later converted into a house. He continued to advance, without plans, the construction of different houses connected to each other, in order to be able to host his friends when they visited him.

Casapueblo is made up of 13 floors and a total of 72 unique apartments with sea views, built over 36 years by Carlos Páez Vilaró. The white color stands out in the landscape, while the organic style is very natural, the artist was inspired by the nests of hornero (characteristic bird in Uruguay), the absence of straight lines makes this work a quiet space that at times integrates to the landscape in which it is located. What was once the artist's workshop and home, today functions as a museum, lodging, and restaurant. Although the lodging is quite exclusive, the entrance for a visit is accessible and allows you to enter the museum that has a variety of his works (some of which are for sale).

It is unavoidable to visit this large-scale work to enjoy the beautiful views and magnificent sunsets for which Casapueblo acquired its fame. This sunset is different from any other and has become a ritual: on Fridays, during the season, a narration by Carlos Páez Vilaró of his own poem dedicated to the sun is reproduced. The mark left by Carlos Páez Vilaró is still present today because Casapueblo was built with his own hands, the ritual in the sun attracts countless visitors to appreciate the moving event, enjoy a drink or stay. It is, without a doubt, an iconic attraction in Punta del Este and throughout the country.
